VIRTUAL REALITY ARRIVES IN UP CLASSROOMS

Virtual and augmented reality is revolutionizing education and Healthcare. To prepare UP students for the future, Foundation Year class piloted UP’s new virtual reality glasses. Using Youtube 360 videos on their cellphones, students experienced being inside the human body, while they were able to look around from different angles to explore the organs. They also had some fun exploring VR by riding virtual roller coasters and exploring nature in various countries! Other classes at UP will soon start to use these glasses soon, so be ready!

FOUNDATION YEAR STUDENTS EXPLORE KHMER CULTURE

UP believes that to embrace the future we must understand the lessons of the past. UP Foundation students in History and Culture Classes visited the National Museum of Cambodia on February 8, 2019, led by lecturer, Socheat Nhean. The purpose of the visit is for students to learn about art and history of ancient Cambodia and use this knowledge to develop their research skills in topics related to Cambodian history and culture.

In class, they have been taught about research methodology by (1) studying the history and Arts style of the collection in Museum (evaluating evidence), (2) Observing how to display the Arts objects (describing observations), (3) Focusing how create an exhibition to display information and share knowledge (presentation skills).

EMERGENCY FIRST AID WORKSHOP FOR ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF

by Mr Allan Herman and his team from Educational Emergency First Aid, Australia – Mr Makarius Harik , Mr Ken Carney, Ms Christine Aurelio.
February 9th – 11th Mr Allan Herman led saw an incredibly dynamic, fun team of paramedics and Red Cross first aiders from different parts of the world visit UP to provide students and staff with EMERGENCY FIRST AID TRAINING. Emergency First Aid Training saves lives.

Saturday and Sunday saw great student learning with interactive, energetic training and interactive videos. The first day focused on the Emergency Action Plan, the unconscious person, CPR / AED, bleeding, shock, choking, drowning. The Sunday focused on triage, fracture, burns, heat stroke and exhaustion, stings, bites and poisons. Students had great fun participating in CPR scenarios, learning multiple uses for a survival blanket, and bandaging each other from head to toe. And thanks to our translators who did a great job in the action packed class.

While students had 2 days training, staff had a consolidated one day training on Monday 11th Feb. This has been great training as UP now has 200 staff and students with up to date First Aid training in EMERGENCY FIRST AID should it ever be needed.

Allan has also donated a file of first aid videos he has collected over his years of teaching to UP students and staff as an ongoing teaching and learning resource which will be accessible through the library. This is incredibly generous and we are very appreciative.

PROFESSOR KACK-KYUN FROM SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY VISITS UP

For the last 3 weeks Professor Kack-Kyun Kim has been visiting UP to teach oral microbiology to dental students. Professor Kim has recently retired from Seoul National University Faculty of Dentistry which is regarded as the top dental school in Korea. Cambodia sorely lacks expertise in this area and he gave a series of lectures on oral immunology and microbiology to year 2 dental students.

Professor Kim has been coming to Cambodia to teach almost every year since 2009. In recognition of Professor Kim’s significant contribution to dental education at UP, to Cambodia and to needy patients the President of UP Professor Ian Findlay has awarded Professor Kim with the title of Adjunct Professor of Oral Microbiology. UP continues to bring top international lecturers to UP to expose our students to World Leading expertise and experiences to help our students obtain a world class education.

UP DENTAL CLINIC INSTALLS “OPEN DENTAL PRACTICE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE”.

UP is the only dental clinic in Cambodia to have installed “Open Dental”, a World Leading dental practice management software from the USA. There are an estimated 10,000 offices in in the US using this system, for an estimated 10,000,000 patients. With its reputation for reliability and ease of use, this is the perfect system for our UP dental clinic.

With Open Dental, we can schedule appointments and recalls, record patient information, link with the dental radiographs, easily show which patients are being managed by which students, track referrals and lab cases, and record billing information. The system will be introduced in stages, and will greatly improve patient management in the clinic, especially in the reception area. Also greater efficiency and patient care as staff and students will be able to see at a glance which chair they have been assigned, which patients they will be seeing and what treatment they will be doing on a particular day. Thanks for Dr Chris Park our US dental tutor for introducing us to this great new program
