A/Prof. Dr. Tino Mercado
He is a Periodontist with private practices in Western Sydney and Blue Mountains. (Specialist Periodontal and Implant Centre). He has been involved in the didactic and clinical training and teaching at the University of Sydney and University of Queensland in the last 21 years. He was awarded the Australian Dental Association Service Medallion Award for his contribution to Clinical Periodontal Research and Dedication to Teaching.
Tino holds an A/Prof position at the Periodontal Post-Graduate Department at the University of Queensland and University of Sydney. His previous publications dealt on periodontal prognostication and his landmark studies correlating Periodontitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes Mellitus have been cited more than 1500 times. His Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) topic and latest publications in peer-reviewed high impact journals are on predictable management of peri-implantitis and management of periodontal recession on teeth and implants using autologous and alternative tissues.
He is the Vice President for Australia and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP, 2022-2024) and Vice President for Pierre Fauchard Academy (NSW), a member of the Regional Committee and Candidate Advisor for Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) NSW. He is the Director for Western Sydney and Greater Blue Mountains International Team of Implantology (ITI) Study Club. He is twice recipient of the prestigious National and Health Medical Research Council Scholarship (1998 for MDSc and 2011 for PhD). His work on the role of enamel matrix derivative on the long-term stability of connective tissue graft on most advanced gingival recession won Best Clinical Research at the last Biannual Meeting of the Australian Society of Periodontology in 2018. His last clinical research on maxillary anterior ridge preservation won Best Clinical Research at the last 2020 Virtual Osteology World Symposium.
As a Dental under-graduate student, graduated from the University of the Philippines Manila, Batch 1995 (Rank No.1). He was awarded the Most Outstanding Dental Graduate of the Philippines in 1995, by the International College of Dentists Philippine Section. He was a topnotcher at the PRC Dental Board Examination 1995.
