Research is a high priority in the Faculty of Dentistry, and this has resulted in a large number of publications in both local and international journals in recent years, as well as many conference presentations. Much of this research has involved dental students, who may contribute to the Faculty’s research agenda through their thesis work, or through their involvement in data collection in Faculty of Dentistry research projects. The number of international publications by students and staff members has grown in recent years, with 1 article in 2014, 6 in 2015, 7 in 2016, 5 in 2017, and 11 in 2018. This far exceeds publications by other Faculties of Dentistry in Cambodia. In addition, in 2018 two book chapters were published overseas with UP authors. UP staff and students have also published extensively in the Cambodian Dental Journal – with 2 articles in 2014, 1 in 2015, 3 in 2016, 8 in 2017, and 6 in 2018.
The UP Faculty of Dentistry has a wide range of research interests, focusing primarily on the following areas:
- Clinical trials of dental materials (preventive and restorative).
- Oral mucosal lesions and oral cancer – including betel quid chewing.
- Sugar consumption patterns in different age groups in Cambodia, and its relationship to dental caries.
- Early Childhood Caries – including strategies to address this major health problem in the preschool and primary school populations.
- Fissure sealants and silver diammine fluoride in school oral health programs.
- The oral health of the elderly population in Cambodia.
- Oral health related quality of life.
