Orientation program for FY pharmacy students for new academic year
On the 13th of June 2022, Faculty of Pharmacy, conducted orientation sessions for foundation year (FY) pharmacy students, with the participation from Dr. Chea Sin (Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy), pharmacy faculties, lecturers, and staff.
The orientation objectives are to guide UP FY pharmacy students about study program, practical work in laboratories and simulated pharmacy, clerkship/internship and study tour inside and outside Cambodia, study plan to achieve the learning outcomes at the end of the year and the whole program, research activities, extra-curricular activities (club, student senate, teaching and learning lounge, workshop, training, social activities and other competitions), experiences sharing in studying and careers from pharmacy lecturers. Through this orientation, pharmacy students will be ready for their academic journey in pharmacy.
Student’s Orientation of ADL Year 1 Semester 1 (2021-2022)
On 15 June 2022, The Department of Laboratory Sciences conducted an orientation session for the new students of Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. The orientation was mainly focused on UP’s policies, student policies, student service, sharing experiences from students in year 2 and year 3, remote teaching/learning delivery platform (Google Meet and UPOP), and teaching/learning strategies.
The University of Puthisastra is delighted to welcome all new students of Medical Laboratory Technology in the academic year 2021-2022 and we are proud of them for choosing UP as their university. The Department of Laboratory Sciences is ready to work and will try our best to make this semester work well and be a success.
ICT Department Mr.REN Phary Joint conference Development Digital skill in Cambodia
Phnom Penh, June 14, 2022 – The Academy of Digital Technology of Cambodia has organized a conference on “Development of Digital Skills in Cambodia”. UP’s Faculty of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology was represented by Mr. Ren Phary. The program is supported by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPTC) and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS).
The conference was chaired by HE Chea Vandeth, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications and Lok Chumteav Kim Sethany, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports at the Innovation Center on June 14, 2022. The government represents higher education institutions, technology companies and development partners, bringing together about 160 participants.
UP’s Medical Laboratory Technology student’s year 2 visited the VS Medical Laboratory
On June 23, 2022, The Department of Laboratory Sciences, conducted a study tour and led Medical Laboratory Technology students in year 2 batch 10 to the VS Medical Laboratory. The main purpose of this visit was (1) to strengthen students’ ability in laboratory techniques, and (2) to clearly understand the sample testing process in a medical laboratory and laboratory quality control.
During the visit, the Medical Laboratory Technology students explored their programme learning objectives and gained experience from the training prepared by the V.S Medical Laboratory.
The students were excited to have the opportunity to visit this medical laboratory and look forward to more opportunities. The UP Laboratory Sciences Department and students would like to thank V.S Medical Laboratory for a warm welcome and for spending their precious time teaching our students
Japan Heart and UP’s Nursing & Midwifery Students
This month, our College of Nursing and Midwifery hosted and organized an event for Japan Heart to meet with our Nursing and Midwifery students at the University of Puthisastra.Japan Heart introduces identity and vision to our students. There, pediatric patients receive free treatment and care as they save the lives of dozens of Cambodian children every day.
We want our students to know and experience this great organization and the opportunity for them to work there. Our students enjoy listening and they also have the opportunity to work at Japan Heart as professional nurses and midwives after their upcoming graduation.
We, the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, appreciate the arrival of the Japan Heart team, who take the time to share the benefits of their organization with our students. We will continue to work together to improve the health sector in Cambodia.
ASSOCIATE & BACHELOR’S DEGREE NURSING STUDENTS INTERNSHIP AT HOSPITALS
On 20th of June 2022, UP’s Faculty of Nursing led 24 Associate Degree Nursing students to the Khmer Soviet Friendship (KSFH) and the National Pediatric Hospital (NPH), in addition to 12 Bachelor Degree Nursing students to Sihanouk Hospital Center of Hope (SHCH), Center of Hope Friendship Hospital (CHFH) and Jeremiah Hospital (CMMC/JH), all for their final year of internships. It’s a crucial time for students’ clinical training in order to obtain experience and apply their knowledge and skills before they become graduate nurses.
The purpose of this internship is to help strengthen the abilities of all nursing students to practice essential clinical techniques with real patients, that are required to achieve the highest quality standards and practice norms within the field of nursing. UP nursing students will become the next generation of leaders and role models for society and that leadership begins with their studies and internship with UP.
Students must finish their theory and practice hours at university and meet all other requirements before they are qualified to commence their clinical internships. Nursing students are divided into five smaller groups to place in different wards such as surgical wards, emergency wards, IPD wards, neurological wards, and ICU wards.The Clinical Instructors in the Faculty of Nursing will follow up with students at the hospitals to guide and support them to build their knowledge, affective skills, and confidence. We wish our students every success in their internship!
The Faculty of Medicine assessed the presence and experience of Clerkship and Internship MD Students in two Hospitals
A Faculty of Medicine delegation, led by Dr. Prom Vireak, Deputy Dean for Clinical Affairs, checked the presence of MD students currently doing their clerkships and internships at Preah Ket Mealea Hospital and at Preah Ang Duong Hospital. In addition to the students’ attendance, their daily clinical practices within different Departments were checked, and information regarding their difficulties and their suggestions to improve the training were gathered.
The team asked the students to fill a survey focusing on three main areas: monitor/mentee, hospital/department and clerkship/internship. “Monitor/mentee” looked at whether the students were assigned to mentors, and whether mentors provided bedside teaching, guided and trained the students to perform expected procedures and provided them with appropriate feedback. “Hospital and Department” concerned equipment, infection control, student environment. “Clerkship/Internship” explored whether the training helps the students increase their confidence in visiting patients and build teamwork and communication with their peers and staff, and whether logbooks are properly and duly filled.
Both Hospitals provided a warm welcome to the UP team. Preah Ang Duong Hospital staff praised UP students for their punctuality and enthusiasm to learn.
The Handa Medical Center Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UP
Recently, the Handa Medical Center, represented by Dr. Nicolae Ignatius Roque, and the University of Puthisastra, represented by Prof. Ian Findlay, agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to record an agreement between the two parties to collaborate on academic cooperation, staff development, and other joint activities with the common goal of developing and improving the standard of healthcare in Cambodia.
Prof. Ian Findlay has high hopes for this agreement and strongly believes that it will allow UP students to participate in actual hospital settings and have opportunities to gain first-hand practical and clinical experience. Additionally, under this MOU, the University of Puthisastra offers three staff members of the Handa Medical Center 30% scholarships for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Bridging program (BSNB), which has already proven a promising start for the partnership.
However, the Handa Medical Center and the University of Puthisastra will continue to work on the mutual objectives that have been set to assure a better and more fruitful collaboration between the two parties.
YEAR-5 PHARMACY STUDENTS WILL CONDUCT COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO THE PROVINCES OF TAKEO, KAMPOT, AND KEP FORM 28 TO 31 JULY 2022
As healthcare providers, we not only have intention make a significant difference in patient lives, but also serve as role models for our pharmacy students and residents. Improving the pharmaceutical care and disease state understanding should never stop at the doors of a hospital or doctor’s office, but should extend into the community. However, although distribution of medications to indigent populations is important, we found opportunities expanding beyond this dispensing mechanism. In a continual effort to forward the role of the profession of pharmacy in the public environment, UP pharmacy students under the support form faculty of pharmacy will conduct this activity to improve their skills and knowledge with regard to pharmacy practice.
These activities will be conducted under the following purpose:
• To survey on how medicine/drugs are used, storage, bought, or discovered
• To conduct medication use review on the medicines/drugs used within the household
• To conduct risk factors screening for diabetes and hypertension
• To provide health education and trainings on how to prevent, notice symptoms, and manage diabetes and hypertension
• To publish leaflets on the availability and benefits of vaccination for their livelihoods
• To publish leaflets on how to find correct and trustworthy information on medicines/drugs in order to fight misinformation on social media etc.
• Torovide guidelines and information on how to find the best medical care with their living area.
Dr Chea Sin Attended DIES Web Seminar Series 2022: University Leadership in Challenging Times – Female Leadership in
Higher Education
As one of DAAD and DIES alumni, Dr Chea Sin, Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Puthisastra was invited to join a web seminar series 2022 entitled ‘University Leadership in Challenging Times-Female Leadership in Higher Education’ and organized by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). In this web seminar, female leaders from universities will be sharing their experiences, realities, and views of and on female leadership.
On the one hand, it was discussed what female leadership actually means and how societal and institutional expectations differ in comparison to male leaders. What learnings can be identified from female leaders and serve as recommendations for future leaders? On the other hand, this seminar focuses on effective strategies for strengthening gender equity in higher education leadership. Are there regional or national strategies for increasing (real) gender equity in leadership positions in universities? What success stories and impact can be achieved here? And looking into the future, what is needed on institutional and/or national level to increase the number of female leaders as well as strengthening and supporting them?
Based on the input by expert speakers the web seminar offered room to share experiences from different world regions on these and further questions.The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) organise this series of web seminars in the framework of their joint DIES Programme.
